The Hills of Kowloon

When I was small, I never appreciated why "Kowloon" means "nine dragons". I can associate why the shape of successive mountains could be imagined as dragons but I must admit I have doubt on the aesthetics behind how static solids and the dynamic mystical creature could feel similar.

Last Labour Day, I was shown the wonders of Nature when I climbed the Buffalo Hill an hour before sunset. I saw the mountains of Kowloon surrounded by mist and fleeting clouds and I suddenly realized that it was exactly this scenery that had caused the Chinese ancestors to compare the mountain ranges to the mystical creature called "dragon".

It wasn't the hills that moved. It was the other way round that created the illusion and the illusive nature of such phenomena is definitely "mystical".

The photo of the day had gained a lot more likes than my usual submissions on Deviantart. The last time I checked, nearly every member who set their eyes on it gave me a "fav" (= "like" on facebook).

You can hike safely in Hong Kong during the summer if you choose your time and venue carefully. Avoid hiking around noon. Sunset hikes are often glorious and more comfortable during summer. Plan your hike and try short routes first.
